Real-time embedded software

Real-time software for systems that cannot fail.

A microkernel RTOS, a real-time data bus and a communication stack for embedded systems. Free for education, research and prototyping — commercially licensed for the products you ship.

25+ years
Nuclear power control systems, implantable and hospital medical devices
Real-time
Deterministic scheduling and data exchange — bounded, not best-effort
IEC 62304
Safety-critical development, with IEC 61508 functional safety and ISO 14971 risk management

Three components. No dependencies.

Each one stands alone — no third-party code, and no dependency on the other two. Use one, or use all three and get an integrated system rather than three libraries sharing a binary.

VIACERTOKernel

In development

A microkernel real-time operating system.

Designed to be embedded inside an existing project rather than to take it over. Portable across architectures, with a footprint small enough that adding it does not force you onto a bigger part.

#include <viacerto/kernel.h>

Microkernel RTOS

VIACERTOBus

In development

Real-time data exchange between components and devices.

The layer that usually gets rewritten, badly, on every project. Moves data with predictable timing, so integration stops being the part of the schedule that slips.

#include <viacerto/bus.h>

Kind
Real-time data exchange
Dependencies
None

VIACERTOConnect

In development

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and TCP/IP in one communication library.

Connectivity as a dependency you add, rather than a subsystem you build and then maintain for a decade. One library and one API across the three transports embedded products actually use.

#include <viacerto/connect.h>

Kind
Communication library

Licensing

Every component is source-available and free to use while you are learning, researching or working out whether it fits. A commercial licence is required only when you ship a product.

Free use

No cost

Full source. No time limit, no feature gate, no registration required to read the code.

  • Education and academic institutions
  • Research and personal projects
  • Open-source projects
  • Evaluation, testing and prototyping

Commercial licence

Talk to us

The same source under terms that let you ship it inside a proprietary commercial product, with support from the person who wrote it.

  • Use in commercial and proprietary products
  • No copyleft obligation on your firmware
  • Integration support and priority fixes
  • TODO — decide: per-product, per-seat or royalty

The complete source for every component is published. You can read it, audit it, build it yourself and verify exactly what is running on your device — no blobs, no black boxes. VIACERTO Connect is released under the GPL. Kernel and Bus are source-available: published and free for the uses listed above, with commercial use reserved.

Consulting

Most of this work is getting the components above into a real system — on your hardware, against your timing requirements, alongside equipment you did not choose and cannot replace.

  • Integration and porting

Bringing Kernel, Bus or Connect into your architecture and onto your target, including the porting work when your silicon is not yet supported.

  • Heterogeneous system integration

Making equipment from different vendors, generations and protocols behave as one system with predictable timing. This is the problem I have spent most of my career on.

  • Real-time communication and data exchange

Protocol and architecture design where latency has a hard upper bound rather than an average — wired, wireless and across the boundary between devices and upper-level systems.

  • Safety-critical development

Architecture, design and review for products developed under IEC 62304, IEC 61508 and ISO 14971 — from an engineer who has built software inside those frameworks rather than audited it.

About

VIACERTO is the work of one engineer with more than twenty-five years in embedded software, most of it on systems where failure is not an acceptable outcome.

That began with information and control systems for nuclear power plants and other power facilities, and the low-level side of SCADA — integrating control devices into upper-level systems over whatever communication and networking technology the site actually had. It continued in medical devices: wearable and implantable equipment including pacemakers and defibrillators, then hospital and EMS equipment such as cardiac monitors, monitor-defibrillators, and the public access defibrillators installed in airports and public buildings.

Much of that work was safety-critical in the formal sense, designed and developed to IEC 62304 for medical device software, IEC 61508 for functional safety, and ISO 14971 for risk management. I worked inside those frameworks as one of the engineers building the software, not as a reviewer looking at it from the outside.

The thread running through all of it is integrating heterogeneous equipment into a single working system: real-time communication, real-time data exchange, real-time processing. The components published here are that experience turned into software other engineers can use, instead of being rebuilt from nothing on every project.
